PRESCOTT

“I’ve got a fighting chance with a jury,” I say firmly to the defense lawyer my parents hired. Dad and Mom are outside, talking to the Detective—not Detective Tom but the new guy in the black trenchcoat. “No way I’m pleading guilty to something I didn’t do!”

The lawyer sighs and looks down at his hands. Then he lines up his yellow legal pad and places the pencil perfectly straight in an OCD way that I guess is a sign of a good lawyer. That’s too bad, because if a good lawyer just told me I should plead guilty and take a deal, that’s a pretty bleak indicator of my future.

I’m not sure exactly what went down, but it appears that there was evidence linking me to the crime scene. They found a red Sig hat at the scene—with my initials written on the inside band. It was my hat, and I felt like an idiot when I remember having it on that night the strippers danced for us. One of the girls had pulled it off my head and paraded it around, and I guess she left with it on. I don’t wear hats much, and so I didn’t even realize it was missing until my lawyer told me they’d found a few strands of my hair in the hatband and matched it to my DNA.

Of course, my lawyer had demanded to know how the evidence could have shown up a week later, and he was informed of the shocking truth that the evidence had been found a week ago.

Found by Detective Tom.

Found by Detective Tom . . . and then concealed by Detective Tom!

“So Detective Tom’s been suspended,” I say, repeating what the lawyer just told me as he nods and sighs again. I glance down at his bowed head. “Why would he conceal evidence? I don’t even know the guy.” I bite my lip and then snap to attention as something occurs to me. “Maybe because he knows I didn’t do it,” I say, my eyes going wide. “And he didn’t want to derail the investigation by logging misleading evidence that may have been coincidence or maybe even planted by the real killer!”

The lawyer sighs for the third time. “That’s not how things work,” he says softly. He makes like he’s going to sigh again, and I tighten up and consider punching him the moment he lets it out. No sigh, and I relax. “Look,” he says. “I work for your parents and I’ll try the case if that’s what you want. Finding your hat on the scene isn’t enough to prove you killed her, especially since there’s a reasonable explanation. We can probably get witnesses to testify that the girl left the house with your hat, but they’ll all be drunk fraternity brothers—and some of them might be underage drinkers and won’t risk taking the stand.”

“What about the Campus Security video,” I say, rubbing my jaw as I remember being on my way there yesterday. “Detective Tom apparently saw the girls leaving the Sig House.
